Steinbeis University - Schools of Next Practices (S-Next) is a Higher Educational Institution in Berlin, Germany that offers state-recognized study and development programs. We offer International Bachelor's, Master's and MBA programs specializing in fields that are most relevant in today's job market.

We're building a small backend team to work closely with our Berlin team. You'd be one of the first engineers on the team. The work is real production backend — services and APIs that the rest of the organization depends on.

We are looking at hiring two specialists. One role is focused on the services and API side: designing endpoints, building backend logic, owning data models, and making sure things are fast and reliable. A second engineer on the team will focus on integrations and infrastructure - you'll work alongside another junior engineer in a Team of 3.

Role Description

As an experienced Backend Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain server-side applications and services that power our digital infrastructure.

• Design, build, and operate Python backend services and APIs

• Own features end-to-end: design → implementation → tests → deployment → operation

• Work async with the Berlin team, with a few hours of protected daily overlap

• Collaborate with the integrations/infrastructure engineer on the team

• Help shape how this team works as it grows

This is a contract, on-site role based in UOA Business Park, in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Qualifications

Must have:

• 3–5 years of backend engineering experience

• Strong Python — production services, not just scripts

• Comfortable designing APIs (REST or similar) — you've made the design choices, not just implemented someone else's

• Comfortable with Docker

• Strong written and spoken English

• Genuinely autonomous: comfortable making decisions and an independent thinker

Nice to have:

• Experience with async, distributed-team setups

• Database design experience (MongoDB, Postgres or similar)

• Comfortable picking up adjacent tooling — Bash, CI, basic cloud — without needing a course first

• Have owned a feature or service end-to-end, including the parts that aren't fun
