Overview
The Data Center Operator (AS/400 Batch Operations) is responsible for the timely and accurate execution of automated batch processing and scheduled jobs on the IBM i (AS/400) system. This role involves monitoring batch processing flows, identifying and resolving job failures, managing system backups, and ensuring the integrity of production output and data. The operator works with application support teams and senior operators to maintain operational efficiency and meet critical service level agreements (SLAs).
Responsibilities
Job Management:
- Perform day-to-day computer operations as listed in the Production and UAT job schedule.
- Executing End-Of-Day batch processing as per Banking Cycle Checklist.
- Monitor online systems activity and EOD batch processing as per daily checklist towards any abnormalities and notify/escalate to Shift Leader for advice on further action.
- Assist in system monitoring and alert escalate to respective technical support team during non-peak hours.
- Ensure to meet the agreed standard service level such as consistent response time, high service availability, and adherence to batch processing schedule and computer reports distribution.
- Provide support for Application and Systems technical support personnel including report spooling. This includes re-spooling branch EOD report upon request.
- Initialize cartridges for daily batch backup purposes.
- Adhere to system security guidelines and maintain audit readiness.
- Provide relief service and assistance to staff of similar and related job functions when necessary.
- Perform related duties as assigned by designated supervisor and fulfils administrative reporting requirements.
Incident And Error Handling
- Proactively monitor the system console for processing issues, job status messages, and other exceptions.
- Perform first-level troubleshooting to diagnose job and system errors, and take corrective action according to documented procedures.
- Restart failed jobs or take corrective actions as needed, following strict restart procedures.
Data And Media Handling
- Execute all scheduled backups (daily, weekly, monthly) using tools like BRMS (Backup & Recovery).
- Ensure all backups complete successfully and verify backup logs.
- Prepare media for offsite storage, and perform file/object restores upon request.
Documentation And Reporting
- Maintain accurate and detailed logs of all batch operations and incidents.
- Generate and distribute reports on batch run statistics, job completion status, and processing exceptions.
Shift And On-Call Operations
- Perform responsibilities during a rotating shift schedule to support 24/7 operations.
- Collaborate with other operators to ensure a proper turnover of ongoing tasks between shifts.
Skills & Experience We Are Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Solid understanding of batch processing concepts and the AS/400 operating environment.
- Experience with backup tools like BRMS is highly preferred.
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve in a time-sensitive environment.
- Excellent communication skills for escalating issues and documenting procedures.
- A reliable work ethic, with the ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions.
Special Skills
- 1 years of experience in a data center or IT operations environment with significant exposure to IBM i (AS/400) batch processing.
- Experience with other operating systems (e.g., Windows, Linux) and cross-platform scheduling.
- Experience with automation tools (Control M, Stonebranch).
