Are you an experienced R&D leader with strong technical expertise and a passion for innovation in manufacturing and product development?

Our client is looking for a strategic and technically capable Director, Research & Development (R&D) to lead innovation and product development initiatives, particularly in aluminium coating technologies for the microelectronics sector. This role will oversee end-to-end R&D strategy, new product development, technical improvements, and continuous enhancement of product quality and cost competitiveness.

Requirements

• PhD in Engineering, Research & Development, Project Management, or a related field.
• 10–15 years of experience in R&D, preferably within aluminium, coatings, or related manufacturing industries.
• Strong knowledge of aluminium alloys, extrusion processes, and surface treatment technologies.
• Proven experience leading cross-functional and technical teams.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
• Japanese language proficiency is preferred for liaising with stakeholders and technical experts.
• Innovative and forward-thinking with strong leadership and decision-making capabilities.
• Strong technical competency combined with commercial awareness.
• Results-driven with a strong sense of ownership.
• Collaborative and adaptable in a dynamic environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesR&D Strategy & Innovation

• Develop and execute R&D strategies aligned with company objectives and market demands.
• Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitor developments, particularly within microelectronics and coating technologies.
• Drive innovation initiatives to maintain product competitiveness and respond to evolving market requirements.

Product Development & Engineering

• Lead new product development from initial concept through product launch and customer acceptance.
• Oversee the design, testing, and production of aluminium coating products.
• Re-engineer process flows to improve cost efficiency and product consistency.
• Apply advanced engineering judgement to solve complex technical challenges.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with Production, Sales, and Marketing teams to align R&D initiatives with business objectives.
• Collaborate with relevant stakeholders on product improvement and innovation projects.
• Support communication and coordination across technical and business functions.

Project & Budget Management

• Manage R&D project timelines and ensure key milestones are delivered on schedule.
• Oversee R&D budgets and ensure effective utilisation of resources.
• Monitor project progress and address potential challenges affecting delivery.

Quality, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

• Ensure R&D activities and products comply with applicable local and international standards and regulations.
• Implement strong quality control and assurance practices.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives based on customer feedback and internal evaluations.
• Identify opportunities to improve coating performance, product consistency, and cost competitiveness.

Leadership & Stakeholder Management

• Lead and manage the R&D team and relevant cross-functional teams.
• Oversee the Customer Service function, including service quality, response time, and productivity metrics.
• Lead internal and external communications related to R&D activities, product improvements, and technical initiatives.
