About Seraya

Seraya Special School is a new, purpose-built centre in Malaysia empowering children and young adults with special needs through education, therapy, vocational training, and pathways to employment.

Backed by MIJ Hub, a Singapore-based non-profit with 14 years of impact, three centres, and social enterprises serving hundreds of neurodivergent individuals. Seraya represents the next chapter in our journey toward inclusive education across the region — a dedicated hub for children with higher needs, supporting every stage of growth from early childhood to adulthood.

About the Role:

As an Adult/Youth Educator, you'll teach and mentor older students and young adults in Seraya's Readiness Adult Program (RAP) and Day Activity Centre programme — building the practical, vocational, and life-readiness skills that prepare them for real employment or greater independence in their day-to-day life. This is an educator role at heart: you're not just training a skill, you're building a young person's or adult's confidence to apply it in the real world. You'll assess individual strengths and goals, build personalised learning plans, design personalised teaching materials, and support each learner's journey toward independence and employment.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Lesson Planning

  • Plan and deliver vocational and job-readiness lessons for RAP students, adapting methods to each learner's needs and pace
  • Build individualized lesson plans around practical skills, industry knowledge, and each learner's career goals
  • Develop and deliver ad hoc courses on emerging vocational topics or industry-specific skills
  • As Seraya's social enterprise pathway develops, provide workplace coaching and ongoing support to RAP graduates (Special Needs Working Clients / SNWC) transitioning into employment
  • Vet, prepare, and deliver vocational and educational materials and reports, ensuring accuracy, relevance, and quality across all learner-facing and leadership-facing content

Assessment & Individualized Planning

  • Conduct skills assessments to identify strengths, interests, and development areas for each learner
  • Take primary authorship of each learner's Individualised Education Plan (IEP) and its supporting plans (ILP, BIP, MIP), as well as the class-level Group Lesson Plan (GLP), with clear goals, activities, and progress benchmarks — subject to review and approval by the Education Lead and/or Principal

Individualized Support

  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team (education lead, intervention lead) to align vocational and life-skills teaching with each learner's broader goals
  • Use visual supports, routines, and positive behaviour strategies to support engagement and self-regulation
  • Apply Seraya's prompt-level framework (independent, verbal, visual, gestural, physical) to support skill acquisition, adjusting and fading prompts as each learner progresses
  • Adapt activities in real time based on each learner's needs on a given day

Direct Support & Seraya Frameworks

  • Deliver foundational classroom-based support across behavioural, academic, and movement domains, in line with each learner's individualised plan, across both DAC and RAP
  • Apply Seraya's general movement therapy principles and frameworks within daily practice, referring learners requiring more targeted or comprehensive movement intervention to the intervention lead

Skill-Building & Mentorship

  • Guide learners from guided practice to independent task execution, applying Seraya's prompt-level framework specifically within real vocational and workplace contexts
  • Coach learners through job-shadowing and work-trial placements, providing real-time, on-site feedback and adjusting support as confidence builds
  • Lead learner-facing goal-setting conversations (not just caregiver-facing updates) so learners have ownership over their own vocational and independence goals
  • Prepare learners for job placement milestones — including interview practice, workplace conduct, and self-advocacy skills — in partnership with the intervention lead and, where relevant, external employers
  • Build learner confidence through structured recognition of progress, distinct from simply completing tasks correctly

Transition & Employment Pathway

  • Identify when a learner is ready to progress toward job placement or greater independence, based on documented progress against their ILP/BIP/MIP goals
  • Liaise with potential employers, community partners, or Seraya's social enterprises to match learners with suitable placement or work-trial opportunities
  • Prepare transition and placement reports detailing each learner's competencies, support needs, and recommended workplace accommodations
  • Brief receiving employers, workplace supervisors, or support staff on how to effectively support the learner
  • Provide a period of post-placement follow-up and check-in support, bridging the gap until Seraya's SNWC support structure is fully established
  • Involve learners and their families/caregivers as active participants in transition decisions, not just as recipients of updates

Progress Monitoring

  • Observe and document each learner's progress across relevant domains (vocational skill, communication, self-regulation, independence)
  • Contribute observations and data to IEP/ILP/BIP/MIP reviews and multidisciplinary case discussions
  • Track and evaluate learner progress, adjusting lesson plans and strategies as needed
  • Give regular, constructive feedback to learners, educators, and caregivers
  • Celebrate milestones and flag areas needing additional support early

Family & Caregiver Partnership

  • Build trusting relationships with families/caregivers, balancing their involvement with each learner's growing autonomy and independence
  • Communicate regularly on progress, milestones, and how to reinforce vocational and life skills at home
  • Support learners in leading their own updates and conversations with family where appropriate, rather than defaulting to caregiver-only communication

Classroom & Student Safety

  • Maintain a safe, well-organized learning and training environment, both on-site and at external work-trial or placement locations
  • Follow health, hygiene, and safety protocols appropriate for youth and adult learners with additional needs
  • Respond calmly and appropriately to behavioural or medical needs as they arise
  • Adhere strictly to Seraya's safeguarding and protection policies for youth and vulnerable adults, including mandatory reporting and escalation procedures

Collaboration, Representation & Professional Growth

  • Support internal and external events — workshops, career fairs, open houses, community outreach — representing Seraya's vocational programme
  • Partner with the marketing/comms team on content that promotes the programme
  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and ongoing training
  • Provide informal support and onboarding guidance to new educators assigned to the classroom; educators on Seraya's mentor track take on formal supervisory and feedback responsibilities for assigned staff
  • Attend and complete courses, certifications, or training assigned by Seraya as a compulsory part of professional growth and continued employment
  • Participate in cross-programme project groups, working alongside educators from other programmes to plan and deliver whole-school events

What You Bring

Qualifications & Experience

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Special Education, or a related field
  • Certification in vocational training or special needs education (preferred)
  • Experience teaching or training youth or adults with diverse learning needs
  • Background in vocational training, job-readiness instruction, or special needs education
  • Experience conducting skills assessments and building individualized learning plans
  • Natural educator — able to teach a skill and build the confidence to use it
  • Strong assessment skills, with the ability to turn evaluation into an actionable plan
  • Clear, warm communicator with learners, educators, and caregivers alike
  • Comfortable representing the programme publicly, at events and in the community
  • Genuine belief in learners' capacity for independence and employment
