About the Role
To ensure safe and effective implementation of H₂S detection, monitoring, and contingency systems during drilling, well testing, or production operations. The role is responsible for installation, calibration, maintenance, and operation of H₂S safety equipment while ensuring full compliance with HSE and Quality Management System requirements at the worksite.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the engineering planning, specification, deployment and technical assurance of H₂S detection, monitoring and breathing air systems, ensuring equipment configuration is fit for project hazards, well conditions and client requirements.
- Conduct routine testing and inspections of gas detection equipment, breathing apparatus, and warning systems.
- Ensure all H₂S safety equipment and systems are fully operational before project commencement.
- Lead H₂S-related risk assessments, HAZID, JSA and pre-job safety reviews to ensure operational risks are identified and effectively controlled.
- Deliver H₂S awareness training and coordinate emergency response drills for site personnel.
- Serve as the on-site focal point for H₂S emergency response and provide technical leadership during gas-related incidents. Lead, coach and develop H₂S Engineers and Technicians while ensuring competency standards are maintained across field operations.
- Manage asset integrity, maintenance schedules, calibration records and lifecycle planning of H₂S safety equipment.
- Monitor H₂S equipment utilisation, maintenance costs and inventory to ensure operational readiness and cost-effective asset management.
- Participate in incident investigations, root cause analysis and corrective action planning following H₂S related events or equipment failures.
- Review project documentation, drilling programmes and operational scope to determine H₂S equipment requirements, manpower allocation and contingency resources.
- Act as the technical authority for H₂S safety operations by providing expert advice to clients, project teams and management on H₂S risk mitigation strategies.
- Coordinate equipment mobilization, demobilization, handling, and logistics to support operational requirements.
- Ensure compliance with company Quality, Health, Safety & Environment (QHSE) policies, client specifications, PETRONAS Technical Standards, applicable legislation and recognised industry best practices.
- Support internal, client and regulatory audits relating to H₂S operations and ensure timely closure of audit findings.
- Develop, review and continuously improve H₂S operating procedures, work instructions and emergency response plans based on operational experience and lessons learnt.
- Monitor operational performance, equipment reliability and service quality KPIs to drive continuous improvement.
- Liaise directly with client representatives, drilling supervisors, company men and HSE personnel to ensure operational readiness and regulatory compliance.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related technical field
- Minimum 7 years' experience in H₂S Safety operations with at least 2 years proven supervisory experience.
- Proven experience in installation, calibration, and maintenance of fixed and portable H₂S detection systems.
- Experience in developing and implementing H₂S Contingency Plans and conducting H₂S awareness or emergency drills.
- Strong understanding of H₂S properties, hazards, and control measures.
- Familiar with offshore safety standards (PETRONAS, Shell, or similar).
- Good communication and reporting skills (English and Bahasa Malaysia/Indonesia).
- Demonstrated ability to lead H₂S field operations, supervise multidisciplinary crews and manage multiple concurrent projects under demanding operational conditions.
- Willingness to travel extensively and work offshore/onshore on rotational schedules.
- Microsoft Office, digital reporting platforms, calibration management systems and electronic maintenance records systems.
