An established public healthcare institution is seeking an experienced Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist (Microbiology) to join its Laboratory Medicine team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced laboratory professional with strong microbiology expertise to take on a senior role covering diagnostic microbiology, laboratory automation, quality assurance and staff development.
Key Responsibilities
Diagnostic Microbiology
- Perform microbiological bench work across bacteriology, mycology, parasitology and molecular microbiology
- Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing and interpretation of results
- Review and investigate analytical, technical and quality-related issues
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of laboratory results through the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Troubleshoot testing and operational issues to maintain accuracy and reliability of laboratory results
Laboratory Operations & Automation
- Support the implementation and operation of laboratory automation
- Assist with equipment maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration
- Manage reagents, consumables and laboratory inventory
- Maintain accurate laboratory documentation, records and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Support continuous improvement of laboratory processes and workflows
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Maintain compliance with laboratory quality management systems, accreditation requirements and regulatory standards
- Participate in Quality Assurance, Quality Control and External Quality Assessment Schemes (EQAS)
- Ensure adherence to biosafety, biosecurity, workplace safety and infection prevention requirements
- Maintain appropriate practices relating to BSL-2+ laboratory environments
Leadership & Staff Development
- Provide training, supervision and guidance to junior laboratory staff
- Support competency development and continuous professional education
- Participate in departmental training programmes and scientific updates
- Promote high standards of laboratory practice, teamwork and service quality
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Life Sciences or equivalent
- Relevant hands-on experience in a clinical diagnostic microbiology laboratory
- Strong knowledge and practical experience in microbiology techniques and laboratory processes
- Experience in bacteriology and antimicrobial susceptibility testing is highly desirable
- Exposure to molecular microbiology, mycology and/or parasitology would be advantageous
- Experience with laboratory automation and LIS would be advantageous
- Good understanding of laboratory quality systems, QA/QC and regulatory requirements
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical capabilities
- Experience guiding, training or supervising junior laboratory staff
- Meticulous, organised and able to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Able to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- Comfortable with rostered shifts, weekends, public holidays and on-call duties where required
