At B&W Engineering, we are shaping the future of infrastructure, design, and engineering through innovation and digital delivery. As our Associate Director – Mechanical Engineering based in Kuala Lumpur, you will play a pivotal leadership role in driving the delivery and growth of our mission-critical portfolio in Malaysia and across the wider APAC region.

You will lead the development, design, and coordination of mechanical engineering services across complex data centre and infrastructure projects, ensuring technical excellence, programme performance, and commercial discipline in line with Black & White’s global standards. Working closely with regional leadership, you will strengthen engineering capability, mentor high-performing teams, and act as a key interface between front-end advisory and project delivery, while championing Black & White’s “One Team” culture.


Technical Leadership & Design Excellence

  • Lead and mentor multi-disciplinary engineering design teams to deliver high-quality mechanical engineering solutions across diverse building typologies, particularly data centres
  • Oversee HVAC system design development in alignment with Front Office requirements, providing technical feedback to optimise performance and constructability
  • Ensure all calculations, schedules, and design documentation meet industry, legal, and B&W standards, delivering “Right First Time” outcomes
  • Ensure designs comply with Malaysian codes and authority requirements (e.g., UBBL, BOMBA, MS 1525) and relevant international standards
  • Conduct technical reviews of drawings and documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance, and consistency with company standards
  • Lead coordination of engineering services across disciplines, ensuring integrated design solutions (including PHE, Fire Protection, and Electrical interfaces)


Project Delivery & Commercial Awareness

  • Maintain oversight of commercial dashboards, invoicing, and financial performance
  • Monitor risk, performance, and internal controls to maintain quality, programme, and cost discipline
  • Identify scope and scheduling changes in line with change control processes, maintaining planning integrity and commercial control
  • Review project status updates and modify schedules or plans as required
  • Ensure manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing activities meet functional specifications and client requirements
  • Survey, test, and report on existing services installations where required
  • Conduct lessons learned reviews to improve productivity and future project delivery


People Leadership & Collaboration

  • Build, lead, and develop the mechanical engineering team in Kuala Lumpur
  • Train, mentor, and coach engineering staff to build technical capability and succession strength
  • Support and contribute to the Company’s Technical Committee in advancing design excellence, innovation, and compliance
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies, software, and industry developments, recommending adoption where beneficial
  • Chair and facilitate technical and coordination meetings effectively


Client Engagement & Business Development

  • Represent the Company at technical meetings with clients, consultants, and contractor teams
  • Take an active role in sales and marketing initiatives, supporting proposals and winning new work in Malaysia and the wider region
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships to support sustainable business growth
  • Promote the Company through participation in industry forums, conferences, and trade publications
  • Accept responsibility for additional strategic or operational tasks as required


ADDITIONAL ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES (QHSE)

  • Awareness of H&S policies and procedures and impact on yourself and team
  • Ensure all staff members complete mandatory compliance training when required
  • Report any accidents, incidents, near misses appropriately


ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES (Resources)

  • Responsible for leading and developing the mechanical engineering team in Kuala Lumpur
  • Responsible for managing team performance against the team plan, with a focus on resourcing and profitability
  • Accountable for technical and project decision-making, and for the quality, compliance, and commercial performance of mechanical deliverables


EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENT (minimum)

  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc / BEng / B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Registered Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate (Ir., PEPC) with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), or Chartered Engineer (CEng) / equivalent professional accreditation, highly regarded
  • Postgraduate qualification in Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline (advantageous)
  • Membership of a recognised professional body (e.g., IEM, ASHRAE, CIBSE, IMechE) preferred
  • Sound working knowledge of Malaysian and international codes and standards, and health & safety legislation (e.g., OSHA 1994)
  • Proficiency in industry-standard design and calculation software (e.g., HAP, Hevacomp, IES, BIM 360 / ACC)


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS (minimum)

  • Typically 15+ years of experience in mechanical (MEP) engineering design, including significant experience leading teams and projects
  • Significant experience in mechanical engineering design and specification across diverse building typologies; data centre design experience is advantageous
  • Strong technical expertise in mechanical systems, with a solid understanding of PHE, Fire Protection, and Electrical interfaces
  • Proven track record of delivering projects to both technical and commercial objectives
  • Experience delivering projects in Malaysia and familiarity with local authority requirements and submission processes
  • Experience leading and mentoring multi-disciplinary engineering teams
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to business growth, including client development and representing the organisation at senior-level engagements
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex technical and commercial challenges, mitigate risks, and maintain programme and cost control across multiple projects
  • Experience driving continuous improvement in engineering design processes and project delivery standards
  • Ability to travel locally and internationally as required
