OVERALL SCOPE OF JOB DESRIPTION

The Executive Director of Marketing is the senior marketing and brand leader for The Datai Langkawi and a member of the Executive Committee. The role is responsible for the resort’s overall marketing, brand, communications, public relations, content and digital direction, ensuring that every expression of the property strengthens its position within the highest tier of international luxury hospitality.

As the flagship resort of The Datai brand, The Datai Langkawi has a high level of visibility and a long-established legacy. The Executive Director of Marketing acts as the property’s senior brand guardian and works in close liaison with the corporate team to ensure that property strategy, storytelling, campaigns, content and communications remain aligned with the wider brand direction and standards.

The role leads a developing team of marketing specialists and support functions, setting clear strategic direction while remaining sufficiently hands-on to guide content, creative execution and major projects. It requires a leader who can build specialist capability, establish disciplined ways of working and bring together public relations, brand, digital, content, partnerships and programming into one coherent marketing approach.

The position is experience-led rather than promotion-led. Its focus is on communicating the character, experiences and values of The Datai Langkawi; developing distinctive, highly curated brand activations and partnerships; strengthening relationships with influential media and tastemakers; and supporting the resort’s continued evolution, including discreet high-end residential, private function and selective incentive propositions.

The Datai Pledge and the principles of responsible and regenerative travel are integral to the role.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a genuine personal alignment with these values and the ability to translate them into credible, informed and engaging brand communications without treating sustainability as a commercial device.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy and Executive Leadership

  • Develop and lead the annual and longer-term integrated marketing strategy for The Datai Langkawi, including brand, communications, public relations, content, digital, partnerships, programming, budget, KPIs and key messaging.
  • Serve as the senior marketing voice on the Executive Committee, contributing to property strategy, guest experience development and key business decisions from a brand and market perspective.
  • Translate the resort’s commercial priorities into brand-led marketing strategies that protect positioning and rate integrity, with emphasis on experiences, relevance and long-term brand equity.
  • Maintain a sophisticated understanding of the international top-luxury resort landscape, affluent traveller behaviour, media trends and emerging opportunities, and use these insights to guide strategy and innovation.
  • Work closely with Sales, Revenue, Reservations and operational leaders to ensure that marketing supports the right market and segment mix while remaining consistent with the resort’s positioning.
  • Lead departmental planning, budgeting, forecasting and performance reporting; establish meaningful KPIs across brand, communications, digital and content disciplines and ensure disciplined evaluation of results.
  • Maintain close and proactive liaison with the corporate marketing team, ensuring appropriate alignment, review and approval of major property communications, campaigns, creative work and brand initiatives.

Brand Stewardship and Creative Direction

  • Act as the senior property brand guardian, ensuring that all guest-facing and internal brand expressions are consistent with The Datai brand’s identity, tone of voice, visual standards and positioning.
  • Set the creative and content direction for the resort across photography, film, editorial storytelling, campaigns, social content, collateral and other brand assets.
  • Lead the concept development, briefing and execution of photo and video productions, working with photographers, filmmakers, creative agencies and internal teams to deliver distinctive, enduring and on-brand content.
  • Bring a strong editorial eye and high standard of judgement to copy, imagery, design and storytelling, with the ability to recognise what is appropriate for an internationally recognised luxury resort.
  • Ensure the resort’s legacy is respected while continuously identifying fresh, contemporary ways to tell its story and communicate new experiences.
  • Oversee brand audits and quality control across resort collateral, digital channels, partner materials and third-party representations of the property.

Public Relations, Media and Reputation

  • Develop and lead an international public relations and media strategy focused on high-quality, influential coverage in the resort’s key and emerging markets.
  • Bring and continually develop a strong personal network of senior travel, lifestyle, design, culture, sustainability and luxury media contacts, editors, journalists and other relevant opinion leaders.
  • Direct the work of appointed PR agencies and ensure clear market priorities, story angles, targets and measurable outcomes.
  • Oversee high-value media stays, interviews, press visits and media events with careful selection, preparation and follow-through appropriate to the resort’s positioning and guest privacy standards.
  • Manage major announcements, media enquiries, executive profiling and reputation matters, including preparation of press releases, talking points, speeches, presentations and other public-facing communications.
  • Identify culturally relevant stories and credible editorial opportunities that extend the resort’s reach without compromising brand integrity or risking overexposure.

Experiential Marketing, Partnerships and Programming

  • Conceive and lead distinctive resort activations, cultural and lifestyle programming, brand moments and milestone initiatives designed for a highly discerning international audience.
  • Develop selective partnerships and collaborations with brands, personalities, practitioners and organisations whose values, audience and standards are aligned with The Datai brand.
  • Lead the marketing and communications approach for highly curated private functions, celebrations and incentive experiences, ensuring that these are positioned and presented in a manner consistent with the resort’s exclusivity and character.
  • Work cross-functionally with Operations, Food & Beverage, Spa & Well-being, Nature, Sustainability, Sales and other teams to turn strong property experiences into compelling, market-relevant stories and programmes.
  • Own the end-to-end marketing framework for major resort-led activations, from concept and audience strategy through creative development, guest/media engagement and post-event amplification.

Residential and Extended Resort Marketing

  • Provide senior marketing leadership for the resort’s evolving residential and extended accommodation proposition, ensuring that positioning, storytelling, content and market approach are fully integrated with The Datai brand.
  • Apply relevant luxury resort residential marketing experience to communicate privacy, place, service, design and experience to an appropriate high-net-worth audience without adopting a conventional real-estate marketing approach.
  • Work closely with corporate, Sales and other designated stakeholders on launch planning, collateral, content, partnerships and communications for new or evolving resort products and facilities, observing strict confidentiality where required.

The Datai Pledge and Regenerative Travel

  • Ensure The Datai Pledge is meaningfully integrated into the resort’s marketing and storytelling, with accuracy, credibility and respect for the work of its teams, partners and communities.
  • Work closely with The Datai Pledge and sustainability teams to identify stories, content, media opportunities and guest-facing communications that deepen understanding of conservation, community, responsible operations and regenerative travel.
  • Safeguard against superficial or overly commercial sustainability messaging and ensure claims are evidence-based, appropriately substantiated and aligned with the brand’s values.
  • Demonstrate the values represented by The Datai Pledge in day-to-day leadership, decision-making, partnerships and choice of marketing activity.

Digital, CRM and Channel Direction

  • Set the strategic direction for the resort’s website, social media, CRM, digital content and paid media, working through internal specialists and appointed agencies rather than treating digital as a standalone promotional function.
  • Ensure digital channels communicate the resort’s experiences and brand story to a consistently high standard while supporting relevant business objectives and audience development.
  • Oversee content governance across website, app, social channels, email communications, online profiles and key third-party platforms, including accuracy, imagery, tone and brand consistency.
  • Use performance data, audience insight and channel analytics to refine strategy while balancing measurable performance with long-term brand building.
  • Ensure appropriate governance of guest data and direct marketing activity in line with applicable privacy and data-protection requirements.

People Leadership and Department Development

  • Build, lead and develop a high-performing marketing team with a clear specialist structure across relevant disciplines, supported by junior coordination and execution roles where appropriate.
  • Set clear ownership, priorities, standards, workflows and accountability across the team, creating a disciplined and highly collaborative department.
  • Coach specialists without unnecessarily duplicating their expertise, while maintaining sufficient subject knowledge and judgement to challenge, guide and approve their work.
  • Develop team capability through regular feedback, objective setting, performance management, training and exposure to best practice in luxury hospitality and brand marketing.
  • Create a culture that values creativity alongside rigour: ideas must be original and relevant, but also well planned, methodical, accurately executed and measured, and most of all in line with The Datai brand.
  • Manage agencies, freelancers and external creative partners as an extension of the team, ensuring clear briefs, quality control, budget discipline and timely delivery.

General Responsibilities

  • Represent The Datai Langkawi and its management team with discretion, credibility and professionalism in all external and internal interactions.
  • Maintain the confidentiality required of an Executive Committee member, particularly in relation to future developments, high-profile guests, partnerships and commercially sensitive information.
  • Build strong working relationships across the resort and corporate organisation and ensure marketing is closely connected to the actual guest experience and operational reality.
  • Undertake other reasonable responsibilities appropriate to the seniority and scope of the position as required by the General Manager and company leadership.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate will be a highly experienced, strategic and creative luxury marketing leader with a strong understanding of brand stewardship, communications and experience-led resort marketing, possessing the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  1. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, Hospitality Management or a related discipline, with a minimum of 10 years’ senior-level marketing and brand experience, including significant experience within the top luxury resort segment.
  2. Substantial senior marketing leadership experience in the highest tier of luxury resort hospitality, ideally gained with internationally respected independent, boutique or ultra-luxury resort brands where experience, design, place and service are central to positioning.

  4. Proven experience marketing luxury resort residences, branded residences, private villas or comparable high-end residential hospitality products is strongly preferred.
  5. A well-developed international media network and a proven record of securing meaningful editorial attention and managing senior media relationships in luxury travel and lifestyle sectors.
  6. Experience conceiving and delivering sophisticated, niche resort activations, milestone events, cultural or lifestyle programming and selective brand collaborations for high-value audiences.
  7. Strong creative direction and content credentials, including experience leading photography and film productions and shaping editorial, social and campaign content to a consistently high brand standard.
  8. Strong strategic and methodological capability: able to build plans, processes, calendars, budgets, briefs, approval workflows and measurement frameworks while retaining creative agility.
  9. Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a mixed team of specialists and junior support colleagues and to manage multiple external agencies and creative partners.
  10. Genuine knowledge of and personal commitment to responsible and regenerative travel, conservation and sustainability, with the judgement to communicate these subjects credibly and without greenwashing.
  11. Excellent written and spoken English, with exceptional editorial judgement and the confidence to advise senior leaders on brand and communications matters. Additional languages and international market experience are an advantage.
  12. High levels of discretion, cultural sensitivity, maturity and stakeholder management, with the ability to operate effectively in a highly visible flagship property with close corporate involvement.
