The Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA) is a specialist arbitration institution which provides a neutral, cost-effective and flexible framework for maritime and international trade arbitrations that is responsive to the needs of industry users. Its global and regional members hail from all sectors of maritime, trade and arbitration communities. SCMA attracts disputants in the region by providing tailored solutions to suit the region’s interests.


The Secretariat helms the promotion and development of SCMA across the region. The Secretariat also leads educational and training symposiums to foster thought leadership and encourage pragmatic solutions for maritime and trade businesses. The Registrar and Assistant Registrar provide on-demand administrative support to disputants and tribunals.


About the Role

The SCMA is seeking a dynamic and strategic professional to drive its strategy and market development initiatives. The role (Assistant Manager / Manager, Market Development and Promotion) involves identifying emerging market opportunities, engaging key industry stakeholders, developing relevant programmes and initiatives, and supporting the implementation of strategies to enhance SCMA's visibility, relevance and long-term growth. The ideal candidate will possess strong strategic thinking, market research, business development and stakeholder engagement capabilities, with an interest in the maritime industry and alternative dispute resolution.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Planning and Market Development

  • Support the development and implementation of SCMA's strategic plans and market development initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen SCMA's positioning and expand the adoption of its arbitration services in Singapore and international markets.
  • Conduct market research to identify emerging trends, developments and opportunities in maritime, legal and maritime arbitration, international trade and alternative dispute resolution.
  • Support the identification of priority markets, industry segments and stakeholder groups for targeted outreach and engagement.
  • Develop market development strategies and initiatives to increase awareness and understanding of SCMA's arbitration services.
  • Monitor developments in the international arbitration landscape and identify opportunities to strengthen SCMA's competitiveness and market relevance.
  • Prepare recommendations for new initiatives, and contribute to relevant projects for SCMA’s development in line with these development areas


2. Industry Engagement and Strategic Partnerships

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the shipping, maritime services and international trade sectors.
  • Identify and develop strategic partnerships with key maritime associations, legal and arbitration institutions and other relevant organisations.
  • Identify opportunities for joint programmes, knowledge-sharing activities and other collaborative initiatives.
  • Conduct meetings, presentations and follow up with stakeholders including shipping companies and maritime services companies to encourage adoption of SCMA Model Clause and Rules in contracts


3. Programme Development and Industry Outreach

  • Develop and implement industry engagement programmes that promote awareness and understanding of maritime arbitration and SCMA's services.
  • Identify relevant and timely topics for SCMA events, including development of programme concepts, themes, agendas and session topics that address the interests and needs of target audiences.
  • Identify and engage suitable speakers, moderators, panellists and subject matter experts from the maritime, legal and arbitration communities.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external partners to ensure the effective planning and delivery of programmes.
  • Work with internal teams and external service providers to develop promotional materials, industry communications and programme content.
  • Work closely with SCMA's leadership and internal teams to ensure alignment between market development activities and organisational objectives.


4. Other SCMA Secretariat related work

  • Secretariat duties including arrangement, recording of minutes for relevant SCMA Committees meetings and related projects with SCMA partners
  • Assisting in new members’ appointment and tracking of existing members’ terms
  • Undertake such other work that may be assigned


Requirements:

  • Training in Business Administration, Marketing, Maritime Studies, Law, International Relations or a related discipline.
  • Relevant experience in strategy, business development, stakeholder engagement or a related function.
  • Experience in the shipping, maritime services, international trade, legal or arbitration sectors would be advantageous.
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, presentation and proposal-writing skills.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives and meet deadlines.
  • Proactive, resourceful and results-oriented, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Willingness to travel overseas where required.


Other Information:

  • 5-days work week
  • Remuneration will commensurate with working experience and qualification
