The Role
The Application & Sales Specialist is a talented individual who merges deep technical chromatography expertise with commercial execution to accelerate revenue growth for the LabTotal portfolio. Serving as the vital link between laboratory science and business development across the Asia-Pacific region, this role partners with regional sales teams, subsidiaries, and distributors to lead technical evaluations, resolve chromatographic separation challenges and directly convert customer trials into sustained recurring sales.
The Responsibilities
The individual in this role is responsible for providing high-level technical and application enablement to accelerate Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) consumables and value chain partner solutions across target accounts, with key responsibilities including, but not limited to:
1. Commercial Revenue Generation & Pre-Sales Workflow Conversion
- Drive and own regional consumables revenue targets across HPLC/GC Columns, in-house consumables kits, and partner portfolios by leveraging technical consultancy to actively close new business and switch out competitors.
- Review end-users’ analytical methods across applicable workflows to identify competitive replacement, column switching, and cross-selling opportunities.
- Collaborate with core instrument sales teams and product specialists to deliver complete workflow solutions, elevating initial system deal value and securing recurring consumable attach rates.
- Provide technical consultancy to match, bundle, and configure consumable packages (columns, sample prep, and analytical kits) alongside core capital equipment during pre-sales pitching or opportunities discoveries.
2. Targeted Sampling & Evaluation Conversion Management
- Plan, initiate, and oversee structured sampling and demo programs for targeted high-potential customer accounts.
- Track and advance customer evaluations from sample dispatch to commercial qualification, sales closure to meet commercial deliverables.
- Provide troubleshooting guidance to address method performance or results optimization and secure customers’ allegiance.
3. Technical & Commercial Sales Enablement Tools
- Develop, deploy, and maintain practical technical enablement collateral to support regional sales teams and channel partners.
- Roll out practical sales tools, including competitive Cross-Reference Tables, on-demand webinars, and product selection brochures targeted at high-runner and high-friction items.
4. Customer Engagement & Demand Generation
- Plan and execute targeted customer-facing sessions (in-person and online), including technical workshops, troubleshooting clinics, and specialized application webinars.
- Deliver workflow-centric technical presentations demonstrating measurable gains in laboratory productivity, column longevity, and sensitivity to generate sales leads and qualified sales pipeline.
5. Distributor & Subsidiary Channel Enablement
- Design and conduct structured technical training modules for distributor application chemists, sales engineers and sales representatives.
- Deliver New Product Introductions (NPI), core portfolio refreshers, and specialized application overviews, validating channel competency through structured assessments and feedback ratings.
6. Technical Quality Assurance & Defective Product Claims Validation
- Act as the regional technical gatekeeper to evaluate, investigate, and approve technical claims and return material authorization (RMA) requests regarding alleged defective consumables.
- Conduct analytical root-cause assessments to distinguish genuine product defects from customer method, system, or operational errors and safeguarding company margins.
The Requirements
- Bachelor’s (BSc), Master’s (MSc), or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering. (Candidates holding a PhD who possess a strong commercial acumen and an interest in customer-facing enablement are strongly encouraged to apply).
- 3 to 5+ years of commercial sales, technical sales, or commercial pre-sales enablement experience within the analytical science, laboratory supplies, or life sciences industry.
- Proven hands-on experience in operating, method troubleshooting, and routine maintenance of analytical chromatography systems (HPLC/UHPLC, GC, Column chemistries, and Sample Preparation) in an industrial, testing laboratory, or commercial vendor environment is advantageous.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 30–40% across Asia Pacific region.
