Product Manager / Product Engineer – AI-Assisted Development

Location: Remote – Malaysia, Indonesia

Type: Full-Time

Working Time: Monday–Friday, 9 am–5 pm (AEST/AEDT)

Want to vibe code as part of your product role?

Are you a Product Manager or Product Owner who likes getting closer to the build?

Maybe you've spent years working with developers, defining features, managing priorities and taking products from idea to launch, but recently you've also started using tools like Claude Code, Codex, or similar AI coding tools to build things yourself.

That's the person we're looking for.

We call the role Senior Product Engineer, but we're not looking for a traditional software engineer.

We're looking for a product person first: someone with a strong Product Manager or Product Owner background who can own a problem, work out how the feature should function, make product decisions and then use AI-assisted development to get much closer to the actual build.

You'll still work alongside our development and release team. You won't be expected to replace them.

The difference is that instead of handing developers a specification and waiting for the feature to come back, you will be the primary driver of the feature from problem through to working solution.

About Us

Automation Consulting Pty Ltd is a small, fast-growing Australian company specialising in AI and automation consulting. We help mid-to-large retailers and operationally complex businesses improve how they work through smart, scalable technology solutions.

We deliver strategy through to execution, not just recommendations, and measure ourselves against the outcomes our clients actually achieve.

About the role

This is a hybrid role sitting between Product Management and hands-on product development.

As a Senior Product Engineer, you'll own features from initial client problem through to working product.

You'll speak directly with users and stakeholders, understand the problem, define how the feature should work, decide what needs to be built, prototype and build using AI-assisted development tools, test your assumptions and iterate.

You will then work with our development and release team to review, harden, deploy and maintain what has been built.

Think of it as:

Product Manager + AI-assisted builder + feature owner.

You are not replacing the development team. You are removing the traditional gap between the person deciding what should be built and the people building it.

Product thinking comes first. Code is one of the tools you use to turn that thinking into something real.

What you'll do

• Own features end to end: discovery, problem framing, requirements, scoping, prototyping, build, validation and handover.

• Work directly with clients and internal stakeholders to understand problems and turn them into clear product requirements and measurable outcomes.

• Be the primary driver of feature and function delivery, including defining how the feature behaves, how users interact with it and what happens across different scenarios.

• Prioritise ruthlessly: decide what to build, what to cut and what needs to be validated first.

• Use AI coding tools to turn ideas into working prototypes and features rather than relying entirely on a development team to translate specifications.

• Work closely with developers and the release team on architecture, code review, security, testing, deployment and ongoing maintainability.

• Ship small, observe how people use what you've built and iterate quickly based on feedback and data.

• Write clear product specifications, decision logic and handover documentation so other engineers can understand and maintain what you've built.

• Explore where AI and automation can improve our own internal products and workflows.

What we're looking for

• Product management experience is preferred, but not required. We care more about whether you have personally taken ambiguous problems, shaped solutions, made product decisions and driven features through to delivery.

• You have owned product or feature roadmaps, prioritised work with stakeholders and taken features from idea through to launch.

• Strong product thinking. You start with the user problem, define what success looks like and make sensible trade-offs under constraints.

• You're comfortable being the person responsible for answering: "How should this actually work?"

• You've started using AI coding tools and genuinely enjoy building things yourself.

• You can create a working application, prototype, integration or feature using AI-assisted development rather than stopping at a specification or Figma design.

• You're comfortable reading code and discussing APIs, databases, architecture and technical trade-offs with engineers.

• You don't need to be the strongest software engineer in the room, but you're comfortable getting your hands dirty.

• Clear written and spoken English and confidence working directly with Australian clients and stakeholders.

• Comfortable working remotely and asynchronously across time zones.

• A bias for action. You'd rather put a small working version in front of a user, learn from it and improve it than spend months designing the perfect solution.

Nice to have

• A software engineering background before or alongside product management.

• Experience building AI products, including LLM-powered features, agents, prompt design, evaluations or automation workflows.

• Familiarity with modern tools and platforms such as Supabase, Vercel, Netlify and APIs/integrations.

• Experience using tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Lovable, Replit or similar AI-assisted development environments.

• Experience in a consulting, agency or startup environment.

Interview process

1. AI screening – an initial conversation about how you approach product problems and build.

2. Practical interview (1 hour) – you will work through a real-world brief with our team.

3. Final interview (~30 minutes) – a conversation with our leadership team.
