Internship, also known as "latihan industri", practical, attachment programme, and many other names, serve a common purpose: to give university students the experience and exposure on the reality of entering the workforce.

For most of us, internships are a requirement which needs to be completed once before you graduate from university. Here are 4 important things that you need to know in regards to securing a placement for internship.

1) Start early!

Well, let's just admit it: Most of us have been guilty of procrastinating, right?

Here's a golden advice: never put off until tomorrow what you can do today.

You might think that you can procrastinate in sending your resumes and applications to companies, but remember this; you are not the ONLY STUDENT (also not the only course, not the only university) who will be applying.

Early bird gets the worm. Be that early bird (chirping with application letters and great CVs). Therefore, start early!

2) Do some background research of potential places for your internship.

List out all the probable and prospective places and get the relevant information. Read up more so you can understand who are the people in their organisation, how they operate, what they specialize in and see if it suits your area of study/what you want to be involved in after you graduate.

Not only will that give you a rough idea of what the companies are all about, it could also help you be more prepared for the interview. Do proper research, unleash the detective in you!

3) Consult your lecturers, academic advisors, counsellors or even seniors.

You might be surprised, but these people may be able to come up with a long list of recommendations for you. Truth is, they are more than happy to help you.

Sometimes, you might be feeling a little lost and confused, especially if you're still unsure of the path you want to take in the near future. (Yep, the future is not so close, but not so far either.) Take some time to figure out what are your preferences, your strengths and your weaknesses and then do some self-analysis.

And finally…

4) You Do You

"Have you decided on a place to do your internship?"

"Oh yes, I guess I’ll be doing it at Company ABC because my friend Z said that she will be doing it there as well."

No. No. No.

Here's the thing, it's your future and you need to DECIDE YOUR OWN goals, your ambitions, and your career plan for the next 10 or 20 years, not your friends. Differences are to be celebrated in friendships anyway, aren't they? It's time for you to step out of your comfort zone and know that no matter what happens, good friends will always be there for you if you need their help and support.

Last but not least, happy hunting!
