This has been one of the hot issues among employees regarding termination and this is surely a very difficult situation for any staff who get fired. Your boss told you during the previous department meeting that your work performance is not good and you get the hint that he's planning to fire you. It just that you're not sure what kind of moves he will be taking. Will you get fired over the phone, text, email, or in person? Well in most cases, some employers can let his staff go without notice or warning and tell you in any manner that they prefer.

My boss fired me by sending a text message, is it accepted?

But do your boss has the right to fire you over the phone? Is it accepted if your boss terminates you just by sending a text " Don't come to work tomorrow. You're fired." Wow just like that? Unless you are bound by an employment contract or covered by state law that stipulates how you can be terminated, so it's up to your boss how he/she wants to fire you. They can do it through a phone call, email, paper letter or by sending a text message.

Employer termination policies 101

Well yes, we cannot argue that employer can terminate you over the phone or via text message but this is not a typical company's policy. Most of the employers know that these methods would hurt their feeling and morale. Imagine how fast a gossip can circulating around the office and the impact on productivity. Most of the companies create standard policies for firing and discharging staff. Generally, this includes a meeting with a Human Resources representative, in which you go over the terms of your termination and leave detailed documentation of your separation, such as a signed document.

The company as well may have provided a warning in advance and have given the individual the opportunity to improve performance. However, this is not actually a requirement unless stipulated in the company policy or agreement. Nevertheless, it is not accepted as in etiquette or moral to discharge an employee via any methods except than in person.

So know your stand and your company policies in order to avoid any misunderstanding in the future. All employees have the right and position in an organisation so use it wisely and do not let the upper to do whatever they wish to jut because you don't know the policy and all law that bind to your contract.
