Have you ever wonder do employers or recruiter check references? In many cases, the answer is yes. So expect that your reference list is important and keep it updated. The contact details that you provided may be checked to ensure the validity status. Some organizations use the reference list to get information on your work history as well. You must want to tidy up your reference list on your resume, right?

How important is reference list?

Based on a survey conducted, more than eight of ten human resource professionals said that they regularly conduct reference checks. It's varied for different level such as 89% for professional, 85% for executive, 84% for administrative job, as well as 81% for technician position. These references check are made to know about the candidates' history, salary, employability and many more.

Reference list rule

Basically, employers check three references for each candidate so it's  important to be prepared. Select the right people, and talk to them in advance about using them. You need someone who can confirm that you work there, your title. reason for leaving and any other details. Your reference list should be able to talk about your performance and your responsibilities so keep your reference updated as possible.

Some employers or recruiters will ask for your permission first to contact your reference list so as not to jeopardize your current position. It's perfectly okay and understood to use reference other than your employer. It can be business acquaintances, customers, vendors are all made good references. If you have done any volunteer, consider using them as references.

One advice that is really important - never tell a lie. If you're tempted to stretch the truth about work history, you better forget that idea. Don't do it because the risks of being discovered are high.
