Typically, students make the mistake of thinking internship is just a course requirement. It's actually more than that! An internship is your chance to get familiar with working life and secure a permanent job before you even graduate. Don't be fooled by all the negative talk about internship where you'll be treated like a maid, have to make coffee, and so on.

If you're really interested in turning your internship into a permanent job, try these 5 powerful tips. Good luck everyone, and may the odds be with you!

1. Be the first in and the last out

You're just an intern, who gets a small allowance or even underpaid, but have to work like a permanent staff five days a week from 9 am until 5pm! But try to view it from a different perspective. You get the chance to do your internship and this is the only chance for you to show your boss that you can do it! Show them that you are on par with other staff and perhaps you can do better than them!

Take it as an opportunity and try to be the first one in the office, and the last one out. At the end of your internship day, your boss may write you a good reference letter to help you secure a job later!

2. Take initiative

A Manager position is not an easy task, they have to be responsible for many things and take care of the whole organisation. So they might not have time to constantly check in on you. If you don't have anything to do, why not take initiative and volunteer to do any task? Offer some help and this can give you more exposure about the job, plus you can gain new experience and knowledge too. Isn't it great?

This simple gesture tells your Manager or boss that you really want to work there. So try your best to do things beyond your role, and impress them!

3. Follow instructions

Pay full attention to instructions given by your superior. This is a major selling point for employees because it shows that you're trustworthy. Even if you're asked to do a simple task, follow the instructions well. It will help if you write down notes whenever you're given a task, and be sure to always ask if there's anything you're unsure of.

4. Exceed Expectations

Do you know how to get a job offer right after you complete your internship? By going the extra mile! By going above and beyond the expectations of your boss, you're showing your passion for the work you're doing and that you fully understand what it takes to get a job done.

Anytime you get a project from your boss, you can do extra research, double check the grammar, present options and, whatever you do, never cut corners!

5. Take a genuine interest in the job

You can't tell if this is the job that you want. So treat your internship as a way to get to know your career path. This helps you grow in your skills and experience so be sure to learn as much as you can. Ask questions if you have any doubts and don't be a wallflower. You have to learn how to grow your skill together with the company. This might be your only shot so make it worthwhile!
