Company Overview

Our client is a Premier Publicly-Listed Agri-Business Conglomerate & Global Market Leader in Oleo-Chemicals, Vegetable Oil Refining & Bio-Renewable Products. Operating world-class continuous processing facilities in Pasir Gudang, Johor, the organization produces essential oleo-chemical derivatives for global food, personal care, and industrial sectors. To support ongoing plant expansion, yield optimization, and process safety enhancements, the company is seeking an experienced Senior Process Engineer to lead process engineering and optimization across high-capacity continuous processing plants.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Production Manager and Senior Production Manager, the Senior Process Engineer acts as the technical authority for daily process optimization, throughput expansion, chemical yield enhancement, and process safety management across continuous production units (Hydrogenation, Splitting, and Fractionation). This hands-on role leads technical studies, HAZOP reviews, root-cause investigations, and automation upgrades while mentoring junior executives and plant operators to maintain peak operational reliability.

Key Responsibilities

1. Process Optimization, Yield & Cost Efficiency

  • Drive continuous process optimization across high-temperature and high-pressure production lines (Hydrogenation, Splitting, Fractionation) to maximize throughput, product purity, and mass yield.

  • Identify and execute cost-down initiatives by optimizing catalyst and chemical consumption, lowering utility loads (steam, power, cooling water), and managing regular steam trap and heat-exchanger audits.

  • Conduct detailed mass/energy balance calculations, process simulations, and technical feasibility studies for plant debottlenecking and capacity expansion projects.

  • Analyze Plant Information Management System (PIMS) trend data to uncover subtle process deviations, implementing predictive control actions.

2. Process Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Lead Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies, risk assessments, and process hazard analyses across assigned production units.

  • Enforce strict compliance with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations and corporate Process Safety Management (PSM) benchmarks.

  • Author, review, and execute Management of Change (MOC) documentation for plant modifications, equipment retrofits, and recipe adjustments.

  • Review and approve process safety-related Permit to Work (PTW) applications within designated plant boundaries.

3. Plant Upgrading, Automation & Troubleshooting

  • Lead capital improvement projects, plant upgrading activities, and process safety retrofits from engineering design through commissioning.

  • Collaborate with Instrumentation & Control teams to drive Distributed Control System (DCS) / Advanced Process Control (APC) automation initiatives to reduce operator interventions.

  • Perform systematic root-cause problem solving (e.g., 5-Why, Fishbone) for operational disruptions, quality off-specs, and equipment downtime, implementing robust CAPA plans.

4. Leadership & Technical Capability Building

  • Direct, mentor, and supervise Production Executives, Supervisors, and Operators to ensure strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols.

  • Prepare and deliver structured technical, process safety, and SOP training modules for shift teams.

  • Foster an operational excellence culture centered on continuous innovation and process improvement.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or Process Engineering from a recognized university.

  • Experience: Minimum 4–6 years of hands-on process engineering experience within continuous chemical processing plants.

    • Direct background in Oleo-chemicals, Edible Oil Refining, Petrochemicals, or Continuous Heavy Chemical Manufacturing (specifically Hydrogenation, Splitting, or Fractionation processes) is highly advantageous.

  • Technical Competencies:

    • Demonstrated proficiency in HAZOP facilitation, MOC administration, and Process Safety Management (PSM).

    • Solid grasp of mass/heat balances, fluid dynamics, heat exchange systems, and distillation column hydraulics.

    • Familiarity with PIMS data analytics, DCS control logic, and process simulation software.

  • Certifications: Professional registration with BEM (Board of Engineers Malaysia) or experience with DOSH/DOE statutory requirements is preferred.

  • Soft Skills: Strong analytical capabilities, decisive leadership, and effective communication skills in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
