JOB PURPOSE

Tau is a behaviour change business within Taylor's Education Group, working with leading enterprises across Southeast Asia. Most corporate learning is built to be delivered. Ours is built to increase the odds that people actually change how they work.

Every journey starts with a sparking experience that makes people want to work differently: inside organisations that excel at it, reflecting with coaches, or practising in realistic simulations. Then come months of practice in their real work, through the Tau app, until the new way holds.

We carry the backing of Taylor's, one of Southeast Asia's most established education groups: in education since 1969, with around 35,000 learners in institutions in 4 countries, including Taylor's University, ranked in the top 1% of universities globally (QS World University Rankings).

We are looking for a Learning Design Manager to own the quality and craft of every journey Tau designs, across sparking experiences and embedding practice. This person will join Tau's founding team as our first dedicated design hire, with significant influence over how the design function and the broader organisation take shape.

Best suited to someone who would relish the zero-to-one process of building a behaviour change business, alongside other people who care about how change actually happens.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Design flagship journeys

  • Take full ownership of the end-to-end design process, from early concept to delivery to retrospectives and revisions.
  • Produce the concrete materials that bring learning experiences to life: HTML decks, case readings, facilitator guides, pre-reads and platform-ready content.
  • Work with subject matter experts across domains and industries to translate their expertise into behaviours people can practise.
  • Mentor and direct any junior or supporting designers as the design function grows.

2. Set and uphold the design quality bar

  • Define and maintain Tau's design quality standards across every journey, ensuring each is behaviour-led, evidence-based and differentiated.
  • Champion Tau's model of behaviour change, ensuring every journey balances the sparking experience with sustained embedding practice rather than leaning on one alone.
  • Drive learning impact assessment and continuous improvement, tracking both the quality and efficiency of builds over time.

3. Collaborate across functions

  • Work closely with the Product Lead and Learning Systems Designer to ensure strong design principles are reflected in the broader suite of journeys and the tooling ecosystem.
  • Partner with Operations on facilitator onboarding and material preparation, so delivery stays true to the design and lands the intended behaviour change.
  • Partner with Commercial on client proposals and scoping, strengthening win rate and client confidence through strong design input.
  • Partner with Tech to help shape a platform built for engagement across sparking experiences and embedding practice.
  • Guide configuration of journeys for client-specific delivery, so each is built around the client's own context rather than reused wholesale.

4. Stay at the frontier of learning science

  • Keep researching the cutting edge of the science of learning and behaviour change, and translate what holds up into how Tau designs journeys.
  • Test new design approaches in live journeys, and keep what measurably works.
  • Build real fluency with agentic design systems and AI-enabled design tools, using them actively to extend design capacity and speed.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE

We are more interested in trajectory and quality of thinking than in years served.

Required

  • Demonstrated experience designing behaviour change, learning or educational experiences for adult audiences, in whatever form that has taken.

Valued, not required

  • Experience leading, coaching or mentoring others.

Explicitly not required

  • A formal instructional design qualification: strong designers at Tau come from diverse backgrounds, including teaching, psychology and design more broadly.

COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES)

Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of andragogy, active learning and behaviour change principles: how habits form, why change fails to stick, and what sustains practice over time.

Skills

  • Strong conceptual thinking: able to see the underlying structure of a behaviour change problem or the organising framework of a field, not just its surface form.
  • High orientation to detail, paired with exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent project management: able to deliver design work within timelines and budget.
  • Genuine, demonstrated fluency with agentic design systems and AI-enabled tools, used actively to strengthen and speed up the design process.

Attributes and disposition

  • Strong empathy: able to understand learner, client and subject matter expert perspectives and design accordingly.
  • Strong individual contributor: proactive, independent, and able to get complex work done without heavy oversight.
  • Genuinely cares about what makes behaviour change stick, and is energised by raising that bar as the function and business scale.

REPORTING & STRUCTURE

  • Reports to: VP, Learning
  • Direct reports: none at the start; expected to mentor and direct designers as the function grows
  • Works most closely with: Product Lead, Tech Product Manager, Learning Systems Designer, Operations and Commercial
  • Working pattern: Hybrid, combining working from home and in the office in Kuala Lumpur. Some regional travel may be required, especially for client-facing roles.

SUCCESS MEASURES

Success measures in the first year:

  • A growing share of Tau's journeys meet or exceed the quality bar across both the sparking experience and embedding practice.
  • Complex and mission-critical journeys are delivered on brief and on time.
  • Collaboration with Commercial, Operations and Tech translates into stronger proposals, smoother handovers, well-briefed facilitators and systems that support high-quality output.
  • Client and learner feedback on delivered journeys shows consistent or improving satisfaction and learning outcomes.
  • Clients can point to specific behaviours that have measurably shifted as a result of journeys this person designed.
  • Design work visibly uses AI-enabled and agentic tools in ways that measurably extend capacity, not just experimentation for its own sake.

HOW WE HIRE

Our process takes about eight weeks, and we keep you informed at every step.

  • Round 1: a 45-minute video conversation with the hiring manager, then a short task that resembles the work. You are welcome to use AI tools; we will ask how you used them.
  • Round 2: three separate conversations in person on one day, including a discussion of your task.
  • What we look for: beyond the experience above, we will look most closely at the quality of your design work, how you build for lasting practice rather than one-off inspiration, and how well you write.
  • We will tell you the outcome, whichever way it goes.

WHY JOIN TAU

  • Meaning. Most corporate learning ends when the session does. Ours keeps going until people work differently. You will help design and deliver the moment someone decides to change, and the months of practice that make the change last.
  • Entrepreneurship. We are early, and most of what you will work on does not exist yet: the methods, the products, even how we run. You will test ideas quickly, learn from experts, use AI as a working tool, and change course when the evidence says so.
  • Reach. Work with clients and colleagues across Southeast Asia, with the backing and reach of Taylor's Education Group. Many roles bring the chance to travel, to our clients and to where we bring them to learn.
  • Growth. Work alongside exceptional people as part of a founding team and shape your own role as Tau grows. Take part in learning journeys inside and outside Tau. Access education benefits for you and your family at Taylor's institutions.
  • Flexibility. Hybrid working, from home and in the office, and flexible employee benefits through Taylor's Education Group.

We hire pioneers, not followers. Much of what we do has no playbook yet. If you would rather write one than follow one, we would like to hear from you!
