About the Role

The successful candidate will play a key role in re-architecting and rewriting existing Golang services into clean, idiomatic and performant Java. You will work closely with the engineering team to build reliable, maintainable and scalable distributed systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Re-architect and rewrite existing Golang services in idiomatic, clean and performant Java.
• Design, develop and maintain highly reliable distributed systems and backend services.
• Apply pragmatic problem-solving principles, focusing on effective and sustainable solutions rather than over-engineering.
• Write clean, readable, testable and maintainable production-grade code.
• Document architectural decisions, technical rationale and complex business logic within the codebase.
• Identify technical gaps and proactively recommend improvements to system architecture, performance and reliability.
• Troubleshoot complex technical issues and contribute to long-term system stability.
• Collaborate closely with engineers and other technical stakeholders on design and implementation decisions.
• Use AI-assisted development tools where appropriate for repetitive or boilerplate tasks while retaining ownership of core technical decisions, architecture and code quality.
• Contribute to engineering standards, best practices, testing and continuous improvement.

Required Skills & Experience

• 5–8 years of professional software development experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with Java and Golang/Go.
• Strong understanding of idiomatic Java development and clean-code principles.
• Experience building and maintaining distributed systems, microservices or highly scalable backend services.
• Experience working on mission-critical systems where reliability, stability and performance are important.
• Good working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
• Experience with the Spring ecosystem, preferably Spring Boot.
• Strong understanding of concurrent programming and backend engineering fundamentals.
• Basic understanding of networking and routing concepts.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to make pragmatic technical decisions and balance simplicity, performance and maintainability.

Good to Have

• Experience with Kafka or other messaging systems.
• Exposure to S3 or object storage technologies.
• Familiarity with Angular or other frontend technologies.
• Experience with database optimisation or alternative data-storage patterns.
• Experience modernising or migrating existing services from one programming language/platform to another.
