Key Responsibilities:
- Install, configure, patch, and upgrade PostgreSQL (and other open-source/relational) database servers on-premises across production and non-production environments.
- Monitor and tune database performance, including query optimisation, indexing, vacuum/autovacuum, partitioning, and capacity planning.
- Design and manage backup, restore, point-in-time recovery (PITR), and disaster recovery strategies; conduct regular recovery tests.
- Implement and maintain high availability and replication using streaming/logical replication, Patroni, repmgr, or pgpool, with connection pooling (PgBouncer).
- Manage database security: role-based access control, encryption, auditing, hardening, and compliance with organisational and regulatory requirements.
- Plan and execute database migrations and upgrades, including from legacy platforms (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL) to PostgreSQL.
- Support secure, controlled data access and pipelines for AI use cases running in the cloud, while keeping databases on-premises.
- Work with infrastructure and network teams on storage, server sizing, firewalls, and connectivity.
- Automate routine tasks using Bash, Python, SQL, or Ansible; maintain runbooks and documentation.
- Respond to and resolve database incidents; perform root cause analysis; participate in change management and maintenance windows.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in database administration of production systems, with strong hands-on PostgreSQL experience.
- Proven experience in on-premises performance tuning, backup/recovery, HA/DR design, and database security.
- Experience with replication, clustering, and failover tooling (Patroni, repmgr, pgpool, or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of Linux server administration, storage (SAN/NAS, RAID), and virtualisation (VMware or similar).
- Basic networking knowledge: TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, ports, VPN, and connectivity troubleshooting.
- Proficiency in SQL and scripting (Bash, Python); exposure to Ansible or Terraform is an advantage.
- Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, pgMonitor, Zabbix) and ITIL-based incident/change management.
- Good written and spoken English; Bahasa Malaysia is an advantage.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with other databases such as MySQL/MariaDB, MongoDB, Oracle, or SQL Server.
- PostgreSQL or Linux certifications (e.g., EDB PostgreSQL, RHCSA).
- Exposure to data pipelines, vector databases (e.g., pgvector), or supporting AI/ML workloads.
- Experience supporting government, financial, or other regulated environments.
Educational Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
