Senior Software Engineer

We build the technology that keeps banking and payments in Malaysia running every day. As a Senior Software Engineer at Finexus, you'll lead the delivery of backend systems that enable product success, drive technical quality, and mentor junior engineers to strengthen team capabilities.

About the Role

You will own system design, architecture, and feature delivery to ensure backend systems are reliable, scalable, secure, and aligned with business objectives. By guiding junior engineers and influencing technical direction, you will directly impact system performance, team productivity, and product outcomes, while preparing for potential growth into technical leadership or management roles.

• Lead architecture and design for assigned modules to improve scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Mentor junior engineers and increase overall team effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of backend microservices, APIs, and features.
• Own architecture and technical decisions for assigned modules, ensuring they meet business and system performance goals.
• Conduct code and architecture reviews for peers and junior engineers.
• Support production systems, troubleshoot critical issues, and improve operational processes.
• Collaborate with Product, Project, and Business teams to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Contribute to the technology roadmap and technical standards.
• Participate in hiring, onboarding, and mentoring to strengthen the engineering team.

Technical Scope:

• Backend & Web: Java, Spring Boot, microservices, Web Services.
• Databases: Oracle, MariaDB, or equivalent.
• Messaging Queues: IBM MQ, ActiveMQ.
• Optional: Mobile backend integrations (Android/iOS).
• CI/CD & Release Practices: Experience releasing software in CI/CD pipelines.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
• 3 - 5 years of professional backend engineering experience, delivering production systems end-to-end.
• Proven experience designing and implementing scalable, high-availability system architecture.

Technical Expertise

• Hands-on backend development using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and Web Services (SOAP/REST).
• Experience with enterprise messaging systems (IBM MQ, ActiveMQ) and integration patterns (XML, WSDL, batch jobs, schedulers, ETL flows).
• Databases: Oracle, MariaDB, or equivalent; performance tuning and stored procedures.
• CI/CD pipelines and production deployments (blue/green, rolling, canary).
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and system optimization skills.
• Knowledge of secure coding practices, authentication, authorization, and regulatory requirements (e.g., PCI, banking-grade).

Leadership & Collaboration

• Mentor junior engineers and foster a high-performing, collaborative team culture.
• Communicate technical decisions and trade-offs effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Take ownership of system outcomes, feature delivery, and operational reliability.
• Identify risks, propose solutions, and make architecture/design decisions that improve system reliability and maintainability.

Preferred / Good-to-Have

• Exposure to multiple tech stacks or full software lifecycle.
• Experience in banking, fintech, payments, or regulated systems.
• Familiarity with DevOps/SRE concepts (SLIs, SLOs, incident response).
• Experience optimizing cost, performance, or infrastructure efficiency.
