Job Summary
Manage and operate a maker space by maintaining equipment, guiding users on fabrication tools, ensuring safety compliance, and supporting workshops to enhance user experience and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
Manage daily operations including opening and closing of the maker space to ensure smooth workflow
Supervise users to enforce workshop safety rules and maintain a secure environment
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot 3D printers, CNC machines, and laser cutters to ensure optimal equipment performance
Guide users on equipment operation, design-for-fabrication principles, materials selection, and file preparation to support project success
Maintain equipment, tools, and consumables in good working condition through regular checks and servicing
Keep accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance activities, and any incidents to support operational transparency
Support workshops, classes, and special projects by providing technical assistance and equipment expertise
Recommend improvements to equipment, processes, and user experience to enhance maker space functionality and user satisfaction
Required competencies and certifications
Proficient in operating and troubleshooting 3D printers, CNC machines, and laser cutters
Knowledgeable in CAD/CAM software such as Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Illustrator, or Cura
Strong understanding of workshop safety protocols and housekeeping standards
Effective communication and coaching skills to guide users and support learning
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
5–10 years of relevant experience in a maker space, fabrication lab, or similar workshop environment
Preferred competencies and qualifications
Experience working in an educational setting or Institute of Higher Learning (IHL)
Relevant diploma or degree in engineering, design, or a related field, or equivalent experience
