Department: Prosthetics & Orthotics (P&O) / Physical Rehabilitation
Reports To: Management
Employment Type: Full-time
Role Overview
The Prosthetic Physiotherapist leads the clinical rehabilitation pathway for individuals with lower and upper limb limb loss or limb difference. Embedded within a multi-disciplinary prosthetic clinical setup, this role bridges the gap between surgical/post-operative recovery, prosthetic prescription, alignment optimization, and advanced functional independence. You will collaborate closely with Certified Prosthetists, physiatrists, occupational therapists, and technicians to deliver patient-centered prosthetic rehabilitation from pre-prosthetic conditioning to community reintegration.
Key Responsibilities1. Clinical Assessment & Pre-Prosthetic Preparation
- Perform detailed physical assessments, including residual limb shape, volume, skin integrity, scarring, surgical healing, joint range of motion (ROM), and muscle strength.
- Implement limb maturation protocols: rigid/elastic residual limb compression, desensitization techniques, and soft-tissue mobilization.
- Design early-stage conditioning programs focused on pelvic/trunk stability, hip/knee extensor strength, cardiovascular endurance, and contracture prevention.
- Assess patient readiness, motor motor control, cognitive capability, and vocational goals to contribute to multi-disciplinary prosthetic prescription decisions (e.g., K-level classification).
2. Prosthetic Gait & Functional Training
- Lead initial weight-bearing and prosthetic habituation protocols using parallel bars, body-weight support systems, and progressive dynamic movement.
- Deliver systematic prosthetic gait training: stance phase stability, controlled weight shift, swing phase ground clearance, symmetrical step cadence, and cadence modulation.
- Train patients on managing diverse environmental terrain: stairs, ramps, curbs, uneven ground, backward stepping, and obstacle avoidance.
- Provide balance, proprioceptive, and fall-mitigation training, including ground recovery techniques and controlled falling strategies.
- For upper limb prosthetics: coordinate with occupational therapy on socket comfort, muscle site control (for myoelectric devices), and functional prehension tasks.
3. Interdisciplinary Clinical Alignment & Device Tuning
- Work dynamically alongside the Certified Prosthetist during test-socket checkouts, static fitting, and dynamic bench/clinical alignments.
- Identify gait deviations caused by socket fit/alignment issues (e.g., medial/lateral lean, whip, drop-off, vaulting) versus those caused by muscular weakness or habituated compensatory movement patterns.
- Provide objective biomechanical feedback to optimize component parameters (e.g., micro-processor knee/ankle settings, suspension seal integrity, hydraulic resistance).
4. Outcome Measurement & Documentation
- Administer standardized prosthetic outcome measures at intake, milestone checks, and discharge (e.g., AMPPRO/AMPnoPRO, 2-Minute/6-Minute Walk Tests, L-Test, Timed Up and Go, prosthetic satisfaction inventories).
- Maintain thorough, defensible medical records documenting clinical goals, patient progress, device tolerances, and medical necessity justifications for insurance/third-party payers.
5. Patient Education & Long-Term Management
- Instruct patients and caregivers in proper donning/doffing procedures, daily skin checks, sock-ply management, liner care, and device maintenance.
- Address phantom limb pain and residual limb hypersensitivity using evidence-based modalities (e.g., mirror therapy, TENS, progressive desensitization).
- Plan long-term community reintegration, adaptive recreation, and ongoing volume-management strategies.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physiotherapy / Physical Therapy from an accredited institution.
- Licensure: Active, unrestricted license/registration as a Physiotherapist with the relevant state or national regulatory board.
- Clinical Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of clinical physiotherapy experience, with at least 1 year dedicated to amputee rehabilitation, prosthetics, or neuro-musculoskeletal rehabilitation.
- Certifications (Preferred): Specialized certification in amputee rehabilitation, advanced gait analysis, or training certifications from component manufacturers (e.g., microprocessor-controlled knees/feet).
