Head of International Business (Food / FMCG)
About the Opportunity
Our client is an established food and consumer products company entering an important phase of international expansion.
The business currently generates approximately US$20 million in annual revenue and has ambitious plans to significantly grow its international operations over the next five years.
International markets currently represent a relatively small share of the overall business, presenting substantial opportunity for further growth.
We are seeking an experienced Head of International Business to take ownership of the international business and lead its next phase of development.
The position is based in Singapore and will report directly to the founders.
Key Responsibilities
- Take overall ownership of the international business, including sales, customers, distributors, margins and profitability.
- Develop and execute international growth strategies across priority markets.
- Review and strengthen existing distributor relationships.
- Identify, evaluate and appoint new distributors, importers and business partners.
- Lead entry into new markets and develop appropriate go-to-market and route-to-market strategies.
- Build strong relationships with distributors, retailers, key accounts and strategic partners.
- Identify new opportunities across products, categories, channels and consumer segments.
- Drive sustainable and profitable growth with focus on pricing, margins, working capital and cash generation.
- Develop annual business plans, budgets, sales forecasts and market development priorities.
- Build and lead the international commercial team as the business expands.
- Work closely with product and marketing teams on brand positioning, new product launches and market development.
- Monitor consumer trends, competitor activities, pricing and market developments.
- Support the development of e-commerce, digital marketing, content and other digital initiatives.
- Travel regularly to international markets to develop customers, distributors and new business opportunities.
Priority Markets
The Gulf / Middle East will be the immediate priority and represents an important part of the company’s international growth plans.
The role will also support business development across:
- Southeast Asia
- United Kingdom
- North America
- Australia
Further expansion into other Asian markets is expected over time.
Candidate Requirements
- Relevant experience within the food, FMCG or consumer products industry.
- Proven track record in international business, regional sales, commercial leadership or business development.
- Experience developing and growing businesses across multiple international markets.
- Experience in the GCC / Middle East would be highly relevant to the role.
- Strong experience working with distributors, importers, retailers and channel partners.
- Good understanding of branded food products, consumer behaviour and retail channels.
- Experience in market entry, distributor appointment, go-to-market strategy and new business development.
- Strong commercial and financial understanding, including P&L management, pricing, margins and budgeting.
- Demonstrated ability to build and grow businesses, teams and distribution networks.
- Comfortable working in a lean and fast-moving environment.
- Hands-on approach with the ability to move between strategy and execution.
- Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder-management skills.
- Willingness to travel frequently across international markets.
Preferred Industry Background
Experience in one or more of the following categories would be advantageous:
- Packaged foods
- Pantry staples
- Spices and seasonings
- Ready-to-cook / convenience foods
- Ethnic food categories
- Other related FMCG food categories
Experience building Asian food brands or ethnic-food categories across international markets, particularly the GCC / Middle East, will be an advantage.
What We Are Looking For
This is not a conventional export sales position.
Our client is looking for a business builder who can first strengthen the existing international operation and then create the next phase of growth.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- improve distributor and customer performance;
- strengthen margins and commercial discipline;
- identify and enter new markets;
- develop new business opportunities;
- build the international team; and
- help shape the longer-term international strategy.
The individual should be equally comfortable developing strategy at management level and working directly with distributors, customers and teams in the market.
Remuneration
A competitive remuneration package will be offered, including a performance-based incentive linked to business performance.
Senior management employees may also be considered for participation in the company’s long-term incentive programme.
