CNC Machine Operator Job Summary

A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Operator sets up, runs, and monitors computerized machinery to cut, drill, or shape materials (like metal or plastic) based on precise technical blueprints. Their core duties include loading materials, checking parts for quality, and making basic machine adjustments.

Core Responsibilities

• Machine Setup: Load raw materials, install cutting tools, and verify proper machine calibration before production runs.
• Operation & Monitoring: Start the machines, monitor speeds and feed rates, and make tool wear or geometry adjustments to keep production on track.
• Quality Control: Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers) against blueprints and design specifications.
• Maintenance: Perform basic preventative maintenance and keep equipment clean.
• Troubleshooting: Identify operational issues or errors and report or resolve them to avoid defects.

Key Skills & Requirements

Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings, CAD designs, and engineering schematics.

Math & Measurement: Solid understanding of basic algebra and geometry, alongside precise measuring techniques.

Mechanical Aptitude: Hands-on ability to use hand tools, understand machine mechanics, and handle heavy materials.

Attention to Detail: High focus on accuracy to prevent material waste and ensure part safety.

Certification/Experience: While exact requirements vary by shop, a high school diploma, vocational training, or previous on-the-job machine operating experience is typically required.
